About 50,000 grizzlies ranged between Texas and Oregon, before white settlers began hunting them. As a result of hunting, poaching, and encroachment on their habitat, no more than 1,000 exist in the lower 48 state now. In the 1960s, the National Park Service stated that the animals could no longer be fed by the public. Hotelkeepers used to

put food out for the bears, they were no longer permitted to do this, thus bears began to look for food in campgrounds and outside the parks as well. Land owners shot the bears out of fear, if something is not done, the grizzly of the lower 48 states will eventually disappear.
