Prior to settlement at least 50,000 grizzly bears ranged from Texas to Oregon, but as a result of hunting, poaching and habitat encroachment, no more than 1,000 survive in the continental U.S. today. Once fed by the public and old dump sites, the bears began looking for food in campgrounds when the National Park Service stated in the 1960’s the public could no longer feed the animals. The bears began to look for food elsewhere and inevitably began to be shot. Conservationists must devise a solution to inhibit extinction.
