Before the white man came at least 50,000 grizzly bears ranged the lower 48 states. Today, only 1,000 survive as the result of hunting, poaching, and encroachment. In the 1960s the National Park Service issued a decree stating animals could no longer be fed by humans, dump sites that these bears foraged were abruptly closed and hotelkeepers could no longer put out food resulting in bears looking in campgrounds and outside parks only to be shot. Conservationists must devise a solution or the grizzly will disappear.
