Before the white man came 50,000 grizzly bears roamed between Texas and Oregon. As a result of hunting, and encroachment on habitat only 1,000 remain. In 1960’s the National Park Service issued a decree stating that the animals were no longer to be fed by the public, due to bears foraging in dumpsites, requiring their closure. This lead to the bears foraging outside the park, leading to an increase in the number of bears being shot. A solution must be devised or the grizzlies will become extinct.
