Interrogating the Interface Topic Forum
by Quinn Warnick - Tuesday, 5 February 2008, 9:29 AM

As we discussed in class on Thursday, each of you will analyze a different software program for the Interrogating the Interface Assignment. In order to ensure that there are no duplications, we will use this forum to "reserve" software programs. Once someone has claimed a program, that program is off limits to everyone else in the class, so before you add your post to this discussion, please read all previous posts.

To reserve a software program, just click on "reply" at the bottom of this initial post, then tell us which program you have chosen and describe what type of software program it is.

Before you make your selection, you may want to review the Interrogating the Interface Assignment sheet. Also, please remember that ALL word processing software programs (Word, WordPerfect, Pages, etc.) are off limits, as is PowerPoint, since we'll be spending a lot of time "interrogating" those programs in class.

Since peeps might like to know what this is I will elaborate further . . .

Filmaker Pro is a databasing software.  Unlike the databasing sofware which is cell based like microsoft excel FP is completely design yourself.  You start with a blank slate and set it up how you like.

I worked for a literary magazine at UNI and we used it to keep track of everything from incoming submissions to customers.  Each entry has it's own page or you can look at it table style.  It's searchable by all parameters you've put into the layout.  I currently use it to database my movie collection.

The neat thing about it is it's power to use for various tasks, different things can be linked into a given database, for instance in our submission database we could reply to submitters via a form letter that would suck their information directly from the database onto the form letter. Querys never had to be a time consuming ordeal for us assistants, but you didn't hear that from me.
